Transfer load from one crane to another

In one of the projects for Mill Handling, BHEL required the load should be able to transfer from one BAY (mill bay) to the other BAY (maintenance bay) without keeping the load down (as there is no space). Means that there are overhead cranes in a bay and there are cranes in the other bay also. And the application requires that the load is transferred from one crane to another i.e the hoist moving on the overhead crane should travel with the load from one crane beam to the other crane beam.

Project Challenges

  1. The Headroom available is very less
  2. The load to be handled is 20T
  3. Space restrictions all around
  4. Alignment of Crane Beams – so that hoist can move from one crane to another.

Solution –

  1. For this a special design was adopted of underslung cranes having cantilevered arm.
  2. Cranes were installed in both the bays
  3. One Bay had cranes with hoist
  4. The other Bay had Cranes without the hoist
  5. All the cranes were controlled by VVVF Drive for smooth operation
  6. Locking mechanism was designed so that once the 2 cranes are aligned then they are locked so that the hoist from one crane can travel to the other without any hassle
  7. When the locking is activated then the LT motion is interlocked not to be operate
  8. Special CT DSL system of CRD was used so that the power supply to the hoist remains intact when it is transferred to the other bay
  9. The operation was through radio remote control so that synchronisation and control is easy

 

Advantages –

  1. Mill bay has huge machines and it is not possible to keep space for the maintenance of the items, this mechanism solved the problem.

The solution adopted saved huge sums of money to BHEL as with lesser investment the work could be made possible.
